England and France start becoming more pleasant — mud drying out, days lengthening. Italy begins warming up. Some ospitali re-opening. Alpine pass still closed.
Excellent. Spring in full swing. England and France green and pleasant. Tuscany stunning — poppies, green hills. Mild temperatures (15–22°C in Italy). Good for full-route walkers starting Canterbury to arrive in Italy in peak condition.
Peak season begins. Best month for the Tuscany section. Alpine pass typically opens late May. Long days. Wildflowers at their peak. Busier at popular ospitali — book ahead in Tuscany.

Hot. Italy regularly hits 35°C+ south of Siena. Start very early (5–6am) and stop by noon. Heat exhaustion is a real risk. Excellent for the Alpine section (cool mountain air). England and France are pleasant.
As July. Also Italian ferragosto (mid-August holiday week) — many small restaurants and shops close. The route south of Florence can be punishing in the heat. For Italy, this is the hardest month.
Excellent. The summer heat breaks. Harvest season begins — grape and olive harvests in Tuscany. Temperatures ideal (20–26°C). Slightly fewer walkers than May/June. Alpine pass still open (closes October/November). One of the best months.
Good, especially early October. Autumn colours in Tuscany are stunning. Cooling rapidly — layer up for mornings and evenings. Alpine pass typically closes in October. Some ospitali close mid-to-late October. Later in the month, shorter days become a factor.
Increasingly difficult. Rain arrives. Many ospitali closed. Alpine pass closed. Days short. Possible for the Tuscany and Lazio sections but requires careful planning. Not recommended for first-timers.
Christmas in Rome is actually a draw for some pilgrims — arriving around 24–25 December is a memorable experience. But the walk itself is very difficult in winter conditions.
